Essays on economic development of China

China's rapid economic growth and social transitions have drawn substantial recent attention. However, there is still limited understanding of these phenomena and the mechanisms behind them. This dissertation investigates three aspects of China's development: education, female labor supply and responses to natural shocks. Chapter 1 sheds light on the option value of education by studying the impact of China's college enrollment expansion on educational attainment at the high school level. Standard human capital models without uncertainty rarely address the importance of the option value of education -- the opportunity that a certain level of education provides to obtain a higher level of education. Therefore, changes in option values can affect human capital investment decisions. Combining survey data with provincial statistics and applying a difference-in-differences method, I find that China's college expansion significantly increased the probabilities of enrolling in and completing high school. The probability of completing high school increased more than that of enrolling in high school. Female students benefited more, as did children whose mother had a high school degree. Chapter 2 studies the relationship between fertility and female labor supply. Many empirical studies find a negative correlation between the two, however the evidence on causal effects is weaker because fertility is endogenous. This paper studies the effects of childbearing on women's labor supply and earnings using a plausibly exogenous change, the relaxation of China's One Child Policy, as an instrument for family size. The main findings are that total fertility has no significant impact on time of working as a wage earner, but children under six have a negative effect. Neither total fertility nor children under six affect women's farming time or annual income. Chapter 3 explores the long-term consequences of China's Great Famine from 1959 to 1961. Several studies have investigated the causes of the famine, yet little empirical work examined its consequences. This paper examines a set of health and socioeconomic outcomes that have not been studied. I find a significant positive selection in the height of survivors born during the famine. Individuals born during the famine received less education than those born before or after the famine, were more likely to work in agriculture when starting to work and transferred less money to their parents

Autonomous pointing control of a large satellite antenna subject to parametric uncertainty

With the development of satellite mobile communications, large antennas are now widely used. The precise pointing of the antenna’s optical axis is essential for many space missions. This paper addresses the challenging problem of high-precision autonomous pointing control of a large satellite antenna. The pointing dynamics are firstly proposed. The proportional–derivative feedback and structural filter to perform pointing maneuvers and suppress antenna vibrations are then presented. An adaptive controller to estimate actual system frequencies in the presence of modal parameters uncertainty is proposed. In order to reduce periodic errors, the modified controllers, which include the proposed adaptive controller and an active disturbance rejection filter, are then developed. The system stability and robustness are analyzed and discussed in the frequency domain. Numerical results are finally provided, and the results have demonstrated that the proposed controllers have good autonomy and robustness

Multi-objective integrated robust H∞ control for attitude tracking of a flexible spacecraft

This paper investigates the multi-objective attitude tracking problem of a flexible spacecraft in the presence of disturbances, parameter uncertainties and imprecise collocation of sensors and actuators. An integrated robust H∞ controller, including an output feedback component and a feedforward component, is proposed, and its gains are calculated by solving Linear Matrix Inequalities. The output feedback component stabilizes the integrated control system while the feedforward component can drive the attitude motion to track the desired angles. The system robustness against disturbances, parameter uncertainties and imprecise collocation is addressed by the H∞ approach and convex optimization. Numerical simulations are finally provided to assess the performance of the proposed controller

The CPCP asymmetries of seven B−B^- decays to two charm mesons are measured using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb−19\text{fb}^{-1} of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment. Decays involving a D∗0D^{*0} or Ds∗−D^{*-}_s meson are analysed by reconstructing only the D0D^0 or Ds−D^-_s decay products. This paper presents the first measurement of ACP(B−→Ds∗−D0)\mathcal{A}^{CP}(B^- \rightarrow D^{*-}_s D^0) and ACP(B−→Ds−D∗0)\mathcal{A}^{CP}(B^- \rightarrow D^{-}_s D^{*0}), and the most precise measurement of the other five CPCP asymmetries. There is no evidence of CPCP violation in any of the analysed decays. Additionally, two ratios between branching fractions of selected decays are measured. The CP asymmetries of seven B−^{−} decays to two charm mesons are measured using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{−1} of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment. Payload Parameter Identification of a Flexible Space Manipulator System via Complex Eigenvalue Estimation

    No full text
Manipulator systems are widely used in payload capture and movement in the ground/space operation due to their dexterous manipulation capability. In this study, a method for identifying the payload parameters of a flexible space manipulator using the estimated system of complex eigenvalue matrix is proposed. The original nonlinear dynamic model of the manipulator is linearized at a selected working point. Subsequently, the system state-space model and corresponding complex eigenvalue parameters are determined by the observer/Kalman filter identification algorithm using the torque input signal of the motor and the vibration output signals of the link. Therefore, the inertia parameters of the payload, that is, the mass and the moment of inertia, can be derived from the identified complex eigenvalue system and mode shapes by solving a least-squares problem. In numerical simulations, the proposed parameter identification method is implemented and compared with the classical recursive least-squares and affine projection sign algorithms. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively estimate the payload parameters with satisfactory accuracy

Robust attitude maneuver control of spacecraft with reaction wheel low-speed friction compensation

    No full text
This paper investigates the attitude control problem in the presence of wheel low-speed friction and external disturbances. The critical issues surrounding wheel friction are firstly discussed, and the spacecraft attitude model and wheel friction model are introduced. A friction observer that can effectively estimate the friction torque is developed. An observer-based sliding mode controller, to perform attitude maneuver, is then proposed. By constructing a particular Lyapunov function, the stability and performance of the proposed controller for the closed-loop systems is discussed theoretically. Numerical simulations are finally provided, and the results have demonstrated that the friction is compensated by the observer and the proposed controller has better transient and steady-state performance

Cluster properties of one particle Schroedinger operators. II

    Get PDF
We continue the study of cluster properties of spectral and scattering characteristics of Schroedinger operators with potentials given as a sum of two wells, begun in our preceeding article [Rev. Math. Phys. 6 (1994) 833-853] and where we determined the leading behaviour of the spectral shift function and the scattering amplitude as the separation of the wells tends to infinity. In this article we determine the explicit form of the subleading contributions, which in particular show strong oscillatory behaviour. Also we apply our methods to the critical and subcritical double well problems.
